Trueman on Waltke

Over at Ref21 Carl Trueman has said this in response to the idea proposed by Bruce Waltke that disbelief in evolution would lead to the church being perceived as a cult (please do not hear that Trueman does not regard disbelief in evolution as “whacky.”):

The next level of the matter, of course, is whether the holding of whacky views can lead to the perception of Christianity as a cult, even if it is not. The answer to this is: yes, but so what? Now, the `so what?’ is important here, for at least two reasons: first, that the world sees it as a cult is neither here nor there when it comes to the church being the church; and, second, the truth of any particular belief within the church is not to be determined by the plausibility structures of the world but by whether it is a consistent articulation of what the Bible teaches.

Trueman’s nailed it here. And this is precisely the problem with the whole Biologos project. It is not that it wants to affirm that science and faith are not enemies. Even anti-evolutionist affirm that. The problem with the project is that its first priority is to look intellectually cool and hip before the skeptical world. As such it begins on the wrong foot.

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
