Church Membership and the President

Matt Lauer interviewed President Obama recently and asked him a question regarding his search for a church. At the time of the interview, President Obama had not yet joined a church in Washington.  The President stated “what we’ve decided for now is not to join a single church, and the reason is because Michelle and I have realized we are very disruptive to services.”

We have dealt with the importance of church membership before.  But President Obama brings up an interesting point.  How can someone with the President’s schedule and visibility remain part of a local church?  This is a difficult situation for those in public office and others in high-travel positions.  I don’t pretend to have a practical answer (I could give you a systematic answer), but it must be something more than having a devotional delivered to your Blackberry.

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
