John Calvin: A Pilgrim’s Life

Herman J. Selderhuis has written a tremendous book in John Calvin: A Pilgrim’s Life.  I have a healthy interest in reformation church history, but I must admin I have not read as broadly or as deeply as I would like.  But considering what I have read, this new volume by Selderhuis is right there at the top of the heap.  I found this biography of Calvin to be very readable and quite enjoyable.

When choosing a biography, too often readers are faced with a choice between something readable and something more substantive than an initial treatment.  Selderhuis walks a thin line by making the book accessible without oversimplifying it.  Each chapter of the book is focused on a single theme, and a glance at the table of contents will reveal chapters such as “orphan,” “stranger,” “victim,” and “patient.”  I found that this literary device focused each section and provided an interesting window into each segment of Calvin’s life.  Pick up a copy.  You won’t be disappointed.

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
